General Information

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a surgical intervention that removes fat and also excess muscle and skin from the upper eyelids and lower. This surgery allows the bags to be corrected, as well as excess skin, which gives the appearance of tiredness or makes it appear older and can even interfere with vision.

However, eyelid surgery does not allow removal of crow’s feet, dark circles or other types of wrinkles, which can be treated by treatments complementary (hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin). Blepharoplasty can be performed as a separate surgery or combined with other facial surgical interventions such as lifting or filling with own fat (lipofilling or liposculpture).

Eyelid surgery can be performed under local anesthesia in the clinic, or under general anesthesia in the operating room in a hospital depending on the characteristics of each patient. Normally only a few hours of stay in the clinic are required, and it is not necessary to stay overnight.

Details of the procedure

Normally the intervention lasts from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the type of treatment that is applied, since it is not the same to operate only the lower or upper eyelids, as the four at the same time.

The incisions are generally made in the line of the upper eyelid and just below the eyelashes, on the lower eyelid, so the scars are perfectly camouflaged. The incision can extend into the crow’s feet wrinkles at the end of the eye. Working through these incisions, the surgeon separates the skin from the fat pocket and muscle, removes excess fat, and often trims excess skin and muscle.
