These infections can be simple aerobic or anaerobic, but most often they are mixed infections that often occur as a result of trauma, surgical wounds, or foreign bodies, including subcutaneous and muscular injection of contaminated street drugs.

The cornerstones of therapy are extensive surgical debridement and aggressive antibiotic therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used in conjunction with these measures, as it offers several mechanisms of action to control infection and reduce tissue loss.
