Thermal burns present a multifactorial tissue injury, culminating in a marked inflammatory response with vascular detachment of activated platelets and white blood cell adhesion with resulting edema, hypoxia, and vulnerability to severe infections.

The malfunction of white blood cells caused by the local environment exacerbates this problem. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy treats each of these pathophysiological disorders and can therefore make a significant difference in patient outcomes. These mechanisms of action have been discussed previously.
