Decompression sickness refers to symptoms caused by blockage of the blood supply, damage caused by direct mechanical effects, or subsequent biochemical actions by suspected bubble formation from inert gas dissolved in the blood or gases. Tissues when atmospheric pressure drops too rapidly. This can occur after divining, flying up, or from hypobaric or hyperbaric exposure.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is used to decrease the size bubbles, not only through pressure, but also through the use of an oxygen gradient.
